Global Digital Citizenship
Real-life Scenario: Students are all about social media nowadays, especially TikTok. At a local K-8 school students are doing the new #SchoolBathroomGraffeti TikTok Challenge. Students are going into the bathrooms and are graffitiing the bathrooms and recording as they are doing it. They are then posting these on their TikTok accounts for everyone to see. Teachers, staff, and administrators are collaborating together to limit the amount of individualized time in the bathrooms. They have created sign-in/sign-out sheets for the restrooms or supervised class bathroom breaks. The parents are unaware that they are vandalizing the bathrooms to create videos on this platform until they receive phone calls from the school.
Educators/Administration: Teachers and administration should educate students and the parents on the challenge and the possible repercussions that can happen from their participation in the challenge. Such as having to sign in/out to use the restroom, scheduled teacher supervision bathroom breaks, suspension/expulsion, and police involvement for vandalism.
Educators/Administration can:
Communication with parents
Educate students on their phone usage
Hold students and families accountable for their phones and their actions
Sign in/sign out for the bathroom
Teachers taking students for bathroom breaks
Parents: Parents should be aware of the challenge and express to their children the consequences of if they did the challenge. Such as suspension/expulsion, police involvement (vandalism), and phones taken away.
Parents can:
Monitor students and their cell phone usage
Have conversations with students about the repercussions and their online safety
Held accountable for damages fees
Students: Students should understand the potential consequences if they were to participate in the challenge and what to do if they see classmates participating in the challenge.
Students can:
Follow guidelines from school staff/parents
Prohibited cell phone use on campus
Sign in/sign out for the bathroom
Hi Kortney!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your perspective on this challenge and how you feel each individual should respond. I learned a couple new ways educators can potentially prevent something like this happening in their schools. I think a sign in/sign out would be a great strategy to work towards prevention of these occurrences.
Hello Kourtney,
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting how TikTok became the popular social media place. When I started using social media was in high school, I used Myspace. However, I don't remember crazy online challenges back then (like 14 years ago). I find it very interesting that kids have to sign in and out of the bathroom because they don't have the discipline to be responsible.Students and parents should be accountable for the students' behaviors, and educators and administrations need to be more aware of what is going on online and find ways to educate students and their parents.
